Do You Need a Rug Pad? When It Matters and Which Type to Buy

Yes for any rug on a hard floor that is small, thin or in a walkway, because a pad stops it sliding and bunching, which is both a trip hazard and the main cause of early wear. Use a thin non-slip pad under small rugs and doormats, a cushioned pad under room rugs you want softer, and an outdoor-rated pad on a deck or porch. Super Area Rugs sells all three types, sized to trim with scissors.

What a pad actually does

A rug pad does four jobs. It grips the floor so the rug stays put. It keeps the rug from rubbing against the floor finish, which protects both. It adds a layer of cushion that makes a flat rug feel thicker. And it lets air circulate under the rug so moisture does not sit against the floor. Not every rug needs all four, which is why there are different kinds.

Small rugs need grip most. A 2 by 3 foot braided rug at a sink or a 20 by 30 inch doormat gets kicked, pivoted on and pushed by the door, and without a pad it ends up crooked by evening. Large room rugs pinned by furniture slide less but benefit from cushion and wear protection.

Thin grip pads vs cushioned pads

Super Area Rugs lists four indoor pads for hard floors, all in a 2 by 4 foot rectangle that you trim to size. The Lock Grip Non-Slip Rug Pad and the Secure Grip Non-Slip Rug Pad are the thin grip-first options: they add almost no height, which matters under a door, and they hold a light rug in place. The Support Grip Cushioned Non-Slip Rug Pad adds a cushion layer for rugs you stand on for a while, such as in front of a sink. The Luxury Grip Extra Thick Non-Slip Rug Pad is the plushest, best under a bedroom or living room rug where you want the floor to feel soft.

Match thickness to the rug. A thick braided wool rug on a thick pad can become a bump you catch your toe on; pair thick rugs with thin pads and thin rugs with cushioned pads.

Outdoor pads

Indoor pads are not made to get wet repeatedly. For a braided rug on a deck, patio or covered porch, use the Outdoor Non-Slip Rug Pad for Patios, Decks and Porches, listed in a 2 by 3 foot size that matches the common outdoor braid sizes such as the Sanibel Tweed and Portsmouth indoor-outdoor rugs. It keeps an outdoor rug from lifting in wind and lets water drain rather than pooling under the rug.

Sizing and trimming

Cut the pad about an inch smaller than the rug on every side so the edge of the rug tapers to the floor and the pad never shows. For an oval rug, lay the rug face down on the pad, trace the outline, and cut inside the line. A 2 by 4 foot pad covers a 2 by 3 foot rug with material to spare, and two pads can be butted together under a 3 by 5 foot rug. Pads do wear out; if a rug starts creeping again after a couple of years, the pad has lost its grip and should be replaced rather than the rug.

When you can skip it

A rug with a built-in rubber backing, a rug fully pinned under a bed or sofa, or a rug on carpet generally does not need a pad, though a carpet-to-carpet pad can stop creeping there too. Stair treads are a separate case: a loose pad under a tread is a hazard, and they should be fixed with tape or tacks instead, which is what the Super Area Rugs Stair Tread Installation Kit is for.

Quick recommendations

Braided doormat at a back door on tile: a thin Lock Grip or Secure Grip pad. Kitchen sink rug on wood where you stand to wash up: the Support Grip cushioned pad. Bedroom or sitting room rug on a hard floor: the Luxury Grip extra thick pad. Sheepskin on a polished floor: a thin grip pad trimmed to the pelt outline. Patio or porch braid: the outdoor pad. Carpeted floor: optional. Stairs: no pad, use the installation kit. In every case trim the pad an inch inside the rug edge and replace it when the rug starts moving again.

FAQ

Will a rug pad damage hardwood floors?

A pad made for hard floors should not. Avoid cheap PVC pads that can discolor finishes, and lift the rug occasionally to let the floor breathe.

Do I need a pad under a braided rug?

On a hard floor, yes. Braided rugs are relatively light for their size and their coiled construction lets them creep. A thin grip pad is enough.

How much smaller than the rug should the pad be?

About an inch on each side. The rug edge should lie flat on the floor with the pad hidden underneath.
